If you are thinking of losing weight, you need to be sure that you are doing this for the right reasons. Just because someone else reckons that you could lose a few pounds, that is not a reason to embark on a weight loss journey. You need to be the one who makes a choice to have a healthier lifestyle, not just for now, but for the rest of your life.
You also need to be doing this because you want to. Not because anyone else thinks that you need to lose a few pounds or to try and emulate the latest celebrity fad. You need to decide if you want to choose a healthier way of life.
Now this does not mean going on a 'diet' or giving up certain foods. Nothing is out of bounds or forbidden, you can even eat that bar of chocolate as long as you do so in moderation. After all, life would be boring without a little treat now and then.
Vegetables and fruit can look very attractive and colourful on your plate. Plus they are full of vitamins and goodness, and yet have very few calories. Use these to make your meals more filling, although try and limit the portions of root vegetables, for example, potatoes, as they can be quite starchy and higher in calories than other vegetables.
Explore different ways of preparing your meals too. Grilling meat or fish is much healthier than frying it in oil, and let the fat drain out while you grill it. Cut down on red meat such as beef and choose to eat white meat like chicken instead. Don't overcook vegetables, but rather steam them to retain their goodness.
Watch your portion control too. You can still enjoy a meal out, just ask the restaurant to provide you with a smaller plate (you could even ask for a children's portion!). You can also enquire about the calorific and nutritional content of meals if you are unsure.
Losing weight is just a case of simple mathematics. You need to use up more energy (calories) than you eat. Normal day to day activities for women use up around 2,000 calories, and around 500 more for men. So you can also increase your weight loss by being more active.
If you have never done any form of exercise, don't panic! You can start by doing simple activities such as leaving the car at home and walking to the shops instead. This will not only save your figure but also the environment.
Gentle exercise like yoga can also help if you have stiff joints or muscles, as this will increase your flexibility and stamina. Swimming is another non impact exercise which can be very beneficial. Dancing is a fun way to burn up those calories and enjoy yourself at the same time, this can be anything from frenetic disco dancing to nice and slow ballroom dancing. The whole idea is just to keep moving.
Success in your weight loss journey depends on you and you alone. Stay motivated and control. Remember that you are choosing this healthier way of life just for you.
